Taxi licence rental: start without buying a plate

Buying a taxi plate is a heavy investment. Leasing lets you operate an existing licence for a monthly fee, and start driving far sooner.

  • Operate a licence without tying up the capital a purchase requires
  • A known monthly fee, written into the contract
  • Optional vehicle equipped to trade standards
  • Support with registration and insurance formalities
  • Optional bookkeeping and invoicing
  • Route into CPAM subcontracting if you want it

What the law says: read this first

Since law no. 2014-1104 of 1 October 2014 (the “loi Thévenoud”), taxi plates issued from that date are free, personal and non-transferable: they can’t be sold or rented, and must be operated personally by the holder. Only plates issued before 1 October 2014 remain transferable and can be leased. Any offer of “licence rental” therefore necessarily concerns an older plate. We check this systematically with you, and we encourage you to confirm the position with the town hall that issued it.

The licence is the real barrier to setting up

Becoming a taxi driver doesn’t end with the exam. Once you hold the professional card you still need an autorisation de stationnement, the “licence” or plate, to operate in a given town. For the older, transferable plates, the purchase price often runs to tens of thousands of euros, when one is available at all.

Leasing sidesteps that barrier: instead of buying the authorisation you operate it for a monthly fee, under a contract setting out the term, the obligations and the exit conditions.

This is the point to be precise about, because a great deal of loose talk circulates:

  • Plates issued before 1 October 2014 are transferable. They can be sold, passed on, and operated under a lease.
  • Plates issued from 1 October 2014, under the loi Thévenoud, are free, personal and non-transferable. They are granted for five renewable years and must be operated personally. They therefore cannot be rented.

Any licence-rental proposal necessarily concerns an older plate. We check this as a matter of course, and we encourage you to confirm it with the issuing town hall before committing, whoever you are dealing with.

What we add beyond the contract

A licence alone doesn’t make a business. Around the lease we offer the ready-equipped vehicle, support with registration and the electronic register, help choosing professional insurance and, if you want it, invoicing, CPAM electronic submission and your day-to-day accounts.

That’s the guiding idea behind our whole operator division: leave the administrative side to people who do it for a living, and spend your time driving.

Why TS57

  • A lower cost of entry

Buying a transferable plate is often beyond reach for a first venture. Leasing turns that capital outlay into a monthly cost.

  • You operate, we provide the framework

The lease sets the fee, the term, each party’s obligations and the exit conditions. It’s all written down before you start.

  • Optional equipped vehicle

If you don’t yet have a compliant vehicle we can supply one: taximeter, roof sign, printer, card terminal and plate.

  • Regulatory guidance

Registration, the electronic register, professional insurance, mandatory equipment. We know the route and we mark it out with you.

  • Bookkeeping and invoicing

Optionally, we take on your invoicing, CPAM electronic submission and day-to-day accounts.

  • A clear way out

The contract sets out termination and hand-back conditions, so you know from day one how it ends if your plans change.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really rent a taxi licence in France?
Yes, but only for plates issued before 1 October 2014, which remain transferable. These can be operated under a lease by a driver holding the professional card. Plates issued since that date are free, personal and non-transferable: they can’t be sold or rented and must be operated personally by the holder.
What is the difference between buying and leasing a licence?
Buying a transferable plate is a capital investment, financed or outright, which becomes an asset of your business and can be sold on. Leasing is a contract: you pay a monthly fee to operate the authorisation, without owning it and without tying up capital.
What do I need in order to lease a licence?
You must hold the taxi driver professional card issued by the prefecture, which means passing the examination and meeting the fitness and good-standing conditions, and you need a properly constituted business and suitable professional insurance.
Is a vehicle included?
Not necessarily. You can operate the licence with your own vehicle provided it’s compliant and equipped. We also offer a package including an equipped vehicle, which avoids investing in the mandatory equipment straight away.
How much is the monthly fee?
It depends on the issuing town, the commercial potential of the plate, the length of the contract and the options you choose (vehicle, bookkeeping, invoicing). We cost each project individually, with no obligation.
What if I want to own a plate later?
That’s a possible progression for a transferable plate. We discuss it while scoping your project so the initial contract doesn’t close that door.
